1895 Socialist Illustrations from 'Appeal to Reason'
Last night in doing research, I stumbled upon a publication I had only read about before. Appeal to Reason was a Socialist publication from 1895 to 1922 and it is filled with all kinds of neat stuff. Here are some illustrations from some of the first publications, September to December of 1895.
The paper was in circulation for over 27 years beginning August 1895 through December 1922. At their height they had over 500K in distribution but, sadly, after WWII the war this country made on the left made people afraid to keep receiving. pic.twitter.com/vPvYD8AKb5— Lumpy Louise, Glitter Spreader (@LumpyLouish) January 18, 2019
In 1895, Wayland hired co-editor Fred Warren who had connections to many activists that contributed to Appeal to Reason including Mother Jones, Eugene Debs, Helen Keller and Jack London. pic.twitter.com/ziSjU72nw5— Lumpy Louise, Glitter Spreader (@LumpyLouish) January 18, 2019
It amazed me how 125 years later a lot of these drawings still apply or maybe "amazed" isn't the right word...more dumbfounded. pic.twitter.com/BAzV4giOaB— Lumpy Louise, Glitter Spreader (@LumpyLouish) January 18, 2019
And Dec 21st's for Christmas. pic.twitter.com/dyRhWn8S5U— Lumpy Louise, Glitter Spreader (@LumpyLouish) January 18, 2019
And here is the first illustration I stumbled upon late last night that dragged me down this rabbit hole. It was quite the trip and I only have 27 more years to go through. pic.twitter.com/AWkOt9btqy— Lumpy Louise, Glitter Spreader (@LumpyLouish) January 18, 2019
